ROLES

Roles

Camerawoman-Seema (group member)
Producer-Saarah (group member)
Director-Ania (group member)
Female actress-Shazza (AS media student)
Male actor-Jessy (AS media student)

Our group consists of 3 individuals and we are all within the same media group. We have kindly asked 2 AS media students who have experience in acting to participate in our music video. We believe they would be best as they are also media students so they will understand what it takes to produce the video and also providing ideas through from their limited amount of expertise. Our group of 3 have all taken roles where we will feel like our skills will be used and where we feel most effiecent. For example, Seema is our camerawoman as she is skilled with the functions of the DSLR camera we are using. She also has previous experience in filming.

RISK ASSESSMENTS

This is the completed risk assessments for each location my group & I will be using. When completing the risk assessments we tried to think of nay hazards which would affect either the crew when filming or the actor and actress during a scene. We thought that thoroughly inspecting each location will allow us to not have to worry about certain hazards so filming will be made easier.

STORYBOARDS

This is our storyboard, which was drawn by Seema (group member),while we all suggested ideas which we thouhgt would be most apporpriate for certain parts of the song and wha would suit each section of the lyrics. For example.at the beginning of the song we here the female artist say 'You know that people gon' change, feelings they all seem to fade'- (scene 1)this highlihgts that they have broken up and are now two different people-therefore we will show them arguing and we may add there voices so the audience can hear what they are arguing about -this allows us the audience to get an idea of the state they are both in and the type of relationship they hae at the moment. The argument that we will show at the beginning will be a flashback and we will highlight this by either using a black and white effect or quickly straight after cut to them being alone.Another would be,in scene 14,the female artist sings 'but you need to know im a on  wave'-this implys to us that they are now both doing their own thing and now living life sepeated and there both trying to get that across to each other,so we decided to use a split screen affect of them both on the phone to each locations in two differen locations. This signifys that they both somewhat still connected but are trying to gain distance-we will most likely shoot this scene in an outdoor area. The scenes where it is the male amd female seperate, we have deciced to use mid-shots to show to the audience clearly they are alone, and to clearly portray their emotions by showing their body alngauge, clothing and also their location. We all also be using closeups to generate a relationship between the audience and the actors by clearly showing their facial expressions. When in a public location we will include establishing shots-for example while the female is on the bridge lip-sycning we will show the background, such as the thames and the London  Eye.As the song is a very heart felt song,we are aiming to really reach connection between the actors and the viewing audience, this will also draw in and interest the viewer.

LYRIC ANALYSIS

These are the lyrics for our chosen song which we have started to annotate thoroughly-this as well as our storyboard will the production process a lot easier and more efficient. For example we have written down that at the beginning of our video we will show the couple arguing and showing her either one of them storm out of the house in anger.

Treatment /Pitch

This my group & I music video pitch. As a group we couldnt decide on which song we would like to do-we deicded to present our pitch to our class and collected feedback by asking whihc song would be best and also more unique. The feedback we collect included suggestions such as not using a black and effect on the video to emphasise we are showing a flash back and that we ciuld use other elements during editing to display a flashback. We also decided on which video we were going use by carrying out a survey which we thought would be most accurate and in the end we decided to do 'On A Wave-Drake.

28th September

Yesterday,as a media class we attended a music video exhibition. The purpose of the exhibition was to display creative and surprising art pieces from many different artist around the world. The exhibition was located at The Strand in a very charismatic building. The location was large and there was a lot of space to walk around.which added alot more depth to the experience of the whole event. In each rrom displayed  a different msuic, for example;the image on the left is from an artist based in Jamica and the music video itself displays a jamaican party.
Viewing all the different music videos really allowed us explore how we can embed creativity and the element of surprise into my group and I music video to make sure it stands out. From viewing the exhibition,we learnt that narrative based music videos can really intrigue viewers-which is what we will pursue as our music will tell a story about a couple's story. What the exhibition did not display was characters lip-syncing-which we will be vital to include in our music video to create a direct relationship with the viewer and the person lip-syncing,as well as eye-contacts between subjects so the viewer becomes an 'observer'-this is used a lot of the time to establish that two people are a couple-especially as my music video is based on a love song.

Thursday, 22 September 2016

This is A brainstorm which my group I formed to produce ideas for one of the songs which we are thinking of using for our music video-'Leaving Tonight' by Neyo and Jennifer Hudson. We thought to use this song because the song really relates to the topic of love. In the beginning of the song, we hear them talking and in our music video we would use models to act this out-leading it to be a narrative based music video, as well the song telling a story of a couple who are going through a hard time. The song has elements which will really allow us to display our skills within our music video. For example, the mood of the song will determine the mise-en-scene, as this a love song with a couple with problems, we would use dark scenes such as a dark bedroom or a studio with minimal lighting. The mood of the song will also determine the cutting rate, which would be slow and steady in this case.

This is my groups & I preliminary task. We first found that an outdoor setting would be more suitable and also make the video more interesting and also link with the models attire and appearance. We used a female model because the song is the artist of the song is female. We also thought the song choice would be suitable, relating to female power and dominance.
To edit the video we used Premier Pro which allowed us to add a lot of effect such as cutting the video, adding transitions, slow motion. This really helped us to make the video more interesting and fun. The camera we used was Canon DSLR -we used autofocus to ensure the video had the best quality, as well using a tripod to keep the camera steady and stable, all these details aided the video to be as professional as possible.

Perfect Strangers-Jonas Blue & JP Copper

The two artists of the song are named, Jonas Blue and JP Copper. Jonas blue British DJ and record producer and is the producer of this track while JP copper is the person who is the singer, funny enough, neither of them are in the music video. During the music video we see a man and woman who seem to continually cross paths. These two characters are meant to portray the meaning of the lyrics-which is about a couple meeting who are complete strangers at first then see eventually fall in love. At the beginning we see the two on the beginning of their journey in some place which seems to be foreign to them. At the beginning of the video it’s almost as if their starting a journey.

We then see them together a lot more and as the video progresses we see their relationship flourish gradually. The video is set outdoors, in a foreign country, maybe an African country due to the scenery-we see them walk through a market which is selling African jewellery, as well as the characters we seeing dancing in a group. This relates to mood of the song, which is positive. The characters displaying happiness and joy as well as romance from the couple, really links to the lyrics as well as the upbeat of the track. The beat of the track also relates to the cutting rate of the video, when watched we can realise that the video is cut on beat to the track, this also makes the video more interesting and fun to watch.I will also embed this into my music video as my chosen song will preferably be a song which consists of a song and catchy beat.We see them travelling a lot as we see them in several locations, this keeps the video interesting and intrigues the viewers. The video is almost like a travel vlog which makes it different. Another way the artists have made the video interesting is by not including the actual singer. This could confuse new viewers as they wouldn't be sure who the singer is which is a negative but at the same time it also allows the artist to tell a story through their music, using other actors would allow the video to be almost movie-like.
Through out the video we see the use of mid shots, which would included either the male or female, this would help us establish where they are, what they doing and it also allows us to analyse their emotions through body language and facial expressions. When editing an filming me and my group will take this into consideration as this is a good way of creating a connection with the audience and the actor/actress.
I would say this music video is narrative as it displays the story of two people on an adventure and somehow finding each other and falling in love however it also shows a performance side as we see people dancing, skateboarding and having fun but unlike many mainstream music videos, we do not see the actual artist singing or making any appearances. From watching this video, i would add to my group and I music video, the use of cutting shots on the beat of the track as I’ve seen in many videos, especially this one. As it makes it really interesting and fun to view.

19th September 2016

Today in class we looked at different music videos which involve a couple with a love song. This was to get a strong understanding of the structure of a love music video. We looked at music videos such as Zayn Malik & Gigi-Pillow talk, Kanye West and Kim Kardashian-Bound 2, John Legend-All of me.These videos allowed us to analyse the features of a music video which is representing a love song. We also looked at how the lyrics linked with what we saw during the video. The mood of the music would also determine the type pf lighting and background we would see, for example, both images were taken from videos which had very dark scenes, due to the mood. This would be similar to my music video as we would include a dark bedroom and a dark studio with very minimal lighting.

Ellie Goulding-Anything could happen

The artist of this track is Ellie Goulding, he is famous for her indie pop music. She is a British female artist and also song writer. With most of her music videos she brings in a lot of excitement to really surprise her fans. In this particular video she is on a rocky beach or a coastline. We see a lot of shots where the water is hitting the water, occupied by loud crashing noises and glass breaking to even more alert the audience. From the beginning we get the idea that this music video is 'nature themed' and may have relation to the lyrics. The title 'Anything can happen' could relate to the uncertainty of nature itself and we never know how the natural world will respond. From this perspective i believe that the video is based as a narrative music video. The shots of the water aggressively hitting the coast can really relate to the lyrics and the title. The rough water could relate this title also. Her pale look and light pink hair could be for her to almost blend in with her surroundings. This again relates to the title as this is very unusual and is not how we would expect to see her. Her appearance and costume within the video also give her an angel-like look. Because of white/pale pink flowy dress she looks almost majestic and graceful, which could also relate to the natural theme of the video. This could be to represent her as a soft. Warm person and that she may be feeling fragile when singing this song and wants her viewers to feel as she does. From the beginning it is made very clearly that she is the artist as she is the only one in the music video who is lip syncing the lyrics and she is shown the most. The camera focuses on her and we only ever see her or parts of the background, no one or anything else. A Lot of the time throughout the video, her lyrics are matched by her actions, for example, this image of her with both fists clenched together is when she sings ‘After the war, we’d say wed fight together’. The word 'fight' and 'together' relate this action to also allow the views to understand how she is feeling and also how she wants us to feel while hearing the lyrics.
As the song reaches its chorus, you can recognise that the cutting rate is in sync with the actual music, this also is another way engaged the viewers and catch their attention-this is an intelligent way to add creativity to a music video.A Lot of the time she refers to 'we’, even though she is shown too alone in the video. This could be highlighting she is talking about herself and somebody else but she almost doesn't want to believe that she is alone on this beach. This relates to the fragility of her appearance. Throughout the video we see her a woman who is going through a lot of emotion. As the video progresses to the end, we see the appearance of someone else, a male, who doesn’t look as well as Ellie Goulding does. He has dark hair and dark features and also has a face covered in blood. This may not be very appealing to some viewers as this could see seen as explicit or unsuitable for some viewers. The two are very different,Ellie is dressed more elegantly and portrays the look of a pure human being, but the lady which is just introduced is shown to be dirty and covered in tattoos which could have negative connotations, such as; rebellion and hardcore. The role of this lady could be another way of surprising the viewers, as we did not expect the appearance of a character, who is so different Ell the video finishes, we see the two in a car together while holding hands, signifying that they are together as a couple. We then see a dramatic change of events when the two are in an car accident near the beach and are torn apart because of this accident.Ellie begins to fly, portraying her as an angel or someone who has just died and is going to heaven. This video quickly becomes a full story as we have witnessed a series of events. This clearly illustrates that this video is a narrative video, which is also what my music video will be too.

MENK music video case study

The artist is a new upcoming UK artist who is from London. He specialises in pop/house music. The video begins in a bedroom as we see the artist himself laying down while lip-syncing the lyrics, he shows emotion through his actions, both distressed and anger. This specific song is very fast pace which links well with the fast contemporary dancing we see from the dancers. The actions shown from by MNEK himself and the dancers shown really match and lyrics as well as the beat of the music played. For example at the beginning of the song he is shown in bed, very calm, as well as the other dancers, they too are seen just sitting down during the beginning and as the song reaches the chorus, the mood changes and we start to see a lot more movement. It is also very clear that he is the artist as he is the only one who is lip-syncing so the audience is not confused and also because he appears more frequently than the others, when the rooms are changing.

His hands on his head and his facial expressions show he may be confused and distressed. The camera uses a 'panning' motion as there are different bedrooms being shown and within each something different is happening. As the camera moves through the different rooms we see something different each time. For example we would see him in bed, looking restless, then him standing up while lip syncing or we would see a dancer. Because of this, i believe the music video is performance based due to the dancing and also the acting by the artist. The use of acting really shows the audience how the music is intended to be perceived which is us understanding that he is continually thinking about someone. I also believe this music video was intended to be a 'performance' music video due to the dancing and lip-syncing. Each room is the same, but different people are in the rooms, doing something different, each time the camera moves along. This creates a contrast of the repetitive use of the same bedroom and its layout and props, against the different people and actions made in each room.

During this video we see bright colourful lighting in the background change continuously. This draws us in even more as the colours grab our attention. The change in bright colours also give the effect of a night-club-this could be a strategy to draw in a youthful audience, such as late teens. From the basis of music video and what is included, we can assume that the target audience would be young people. We can also assume this from the layout of background. We see bedrooms which are not very neat and 'classy'-this gives the video more a relax feel which could also help by keeping the focus on the artist and the dancers shown.
This music video doesn't fully match the video my group and i would like to produce but the effects added into this video such as bright lighting,to empathise the meaning of the lyrics and emotions of the artists. This will also allow the audience to understand whether this a narrative video, which my group and I video will be due to the mood of the song
